The Metro Vancouver Seismic Microzonation Mapping Project
Date: Wednesday, January 15, 2025, Time: 3:00 p.m. ET, 12:00 p.m. PT
Abstract
Prediction of probabilistic earthquake ground motion inclusive of local site effects across Metro Vancouver is a multi-faceted challenge. The Metro Vancouver seismic microzonation mapping project is a near decade multi-million dollar effort to achieve regional-scale seismic hazard mapping of Metro Vancouver including earthquake shaking de/amplification due to site and basin effects, and seismic-induced landslide and liquefaction hazard potential. The project has produced a total of 29 region-specific seismic hazard maps of western Metro Vancouver and EGBC Professional Practice Guidelines of Seismic Microzonation Mapping in British Columbia thus far with continued mapping of eastern Metro Vancouver communities into 2026. This presentation will review how the project has/is achieving high-level and comprehensive regional-scale seismic hazard mapping within the greater Canadian context and thereby the advancements to knowledge of seismic hazards impacting Metro Vancouver.
Presenter
Dr. Sheri Molnar
Sheri Molnar is an Associate Professor at the University of Western Ontario conducting earthquake hazard research focused on advancement of seismic site characterization and earthquake ground motion prediction using physics-based numerical wave propagation simulations to account for local seismic site effects in seismic hazard assessment and mapping. Molnar continues to serve on seismic design committees of the 2020 and 2025 Canadian building codes, is a former director of the Canadian Association for Earthquake Engineering and Seismology, and former president of the EERI British Columbia Regional Chapter.
