Uncovering the Lessons from the Earthquake Sequence in Turkey

Wednesday, March 15, 2023, 3:00 p.m. EDT

Registration Link: Zoom Webinar

Abstract

On February 6th, Turkey experienced two devastating earthquakes within nine hours that struck the southeast region including ten populated cities with magnitudes of M7.8 and M7.6, respectively. These events have caused widespread damage to the built environment and claimed thousands of lives, highlighting the urgent need for better seismic preparedness and disaster response strategies. This webinar aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the recent earthquake sequence, focusing on the structural and geotechnical observations, ground motion characteristics, and lessons learned from these events. The presentation will cover the latest research findings on the performance of buildings, infrastructure, and critical facilities during the earthquakes with a particular focus on base-isolated hospitals, and other seismic-resistant residential buildings built by tunnel-form systems. The presentation will also highlight the effectiveness of earthquake early warning systems, and the latest advances in structural health monitoring technologies, and provide insights into how they can be implemented to enhance earthquake resilience and risk reduction. Finally, the webinar will discuss the future implications of the earthquakes for earthquake engineering and seismology, emphasizing the key challenges and opportunities for improving earthquake resilience and risk reduction in Turkey and beyond.
